Abstract
Many of the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated by surgical resection experience recurrence sooner or later. Authors analyzed the angiographic features and the survival data of the patients with recurrent HCC treated by
transarterial
chemoembolization (TAE) to evaluate the effectiveness of the TAE on postoperative recurrent HCC. Eighty seven patients with HCC were operated before September 1991 and had recurrence. All were treated by TAE by the LipiodolAdriamycin mixture with
or
without Gelfoam embolization.
Angiographic types of the recurrent HCC were single nodular type in 28%, multinodular type in 54.9%, single nodular type with perinodal extension in 4.9%, and diffuse type in 12.2%. One, two and three year survival rates after recur were 74.7%
and
55.5%
and 39.6% respectiviely, and were not significantly different from those of 206 patients who wee not operated, but had good liver functions. Three year survival rate after surgery was 58.8% and was significantly better than that of patients who
were not
operated (41.8%). With transarterial chemoembolization, survival rate after recurrence was as same as that of patients who were not operated.
TAE can be the effective mean of treating recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma after surgical resection.
